Description
Originally issued to the Belgian Armed Forces, these M56-pattern cotton field suspenders are the genuine article — the same load-bearing harness worn by Belgian troops with their olive drab web gear for decades of Cold War service. Built to the classic four-point "H-harness" specification first standardized in the mid-1950s, they hook into a pistol belt and distribute the weight of canteens, ammo pouches, butt pack, first-aid pouch and other belt-mounted kit up onto the shoulders, where it belongs.
For retailers, this is one of those quiet workhorse pieces of surplus that keeps moving off the shelf. Military collectors and reenactors need them to complete authentic Cold War Belgian and NATO impressions. Airsoft and milsim players grab them as a budget-friendly, period-correct alternative to modern nylon rigs. Hunters, campers and preppers use them to organize a belt load without committing to a full chest rig or plate carrier. And the broad-shouldered olive drab silhouette has a strong vintage-military fashion pull as well — they layer cleanly over a field shirt, hoodie or M65 jacket.
Construction & Features
- H-back yoke design with padded, reinforced cotton shoulder sections to spread load and reduce strap dig under sustained wear.
- Four independent adjustment points — one per strap — so each side can be dialed in for torso length and load balance.
- Heavy cotton webbing in classic olive drab green, the way it left the depot.
- Blackened steel hardware: adjustment buckles plus four M-series wire hook clips at the strap ends to connect into pistol-belt eyelets or butt-pack rings.
- Equipment retention loops on the shoulder straps for routing additional gear or signal cord.
- Origin: Belgian military surplus, M56-pattern issue.
Condition
These are used, previously-issued suspenders. Expect honest field-use character — light fading, faint stamps or unit markings, and minor scuffs on the hardware. Webbing, stitching and buckles remain fully functional. That lived-in patina is exactly what reenactors, collectors and vintage-look buyers are after; it can't be faked on a new repro.
Why It Sells
- Authentic Cold War-era European military issue at a price point that moves volume.
- Cross-appeal to collectors, reenactors, airsoft players, outdoorsmen and vintage-military fashion shoppers.
- Pairs naturally with surplus pistol belts, butt packs, canteens and ammo pouches you may already stock — a strong add-on item at checkout.
