EDI, built the way we do business.

Our EDI now runs on software we wrote ourselves — native X12 50X0, direct or through your VAN, and shaped around how a wholesale surplus operation actually moves product.

The Sturm USA Team October 8, 2026

A lot of our dealers would rather not key orders in by hand, and some of them aren’t permitted to. Their purchasing department runs on EDI, and a supplier either fits that workflow or doesn’t get the order. We’ve been trading documents electronically with retail partners for years, so that part isn’t news.

What’s news is what sits underneath it. We retired the third-party layer and replaced it with EDI software our own team wrote. Same standards, same documents, same obligations to your system — now built on top of our catalog, our stock and our order flow instead of bolted on beside them. It’s live today, and it has already proven to be a cleaner fit for the way we run wholesale. Here’s what it means for your buying team.

Built In-House

We wrote the software ourselves.

Most suppliers buy EDI as an add-on. Those products are written to be generic enough for any industry, which means they rarely know anything about the business running them — they take a file in, hand a file out, and everything in between is a guess at what the supplier meant.

Ours isn’t a guess. Our team built the platform against our own catalog, our own inventory and our own order flow, so it knows what a mixed lot is, what a restock does to availability, and which warehouse a line is actually going to ship from.

The practical payoff is support. When you call about a purchase order, you’re talking to people looking at the same software that processed it. No ticket queue at an outside vendor, no waiting a day to find out why a line came back short.

Speaks Your Language

Native X12, version 50X0.

X12 is the document standard behind most retail purchasing in North America — it’s the format your system already uses to send a purchase order and to expect an invoice back. We support version 50X0 natively, which simply means our software reads and writes those documents as they are. Nothing is translated into a different format and back on the way through.

That matters because every conversion step is somewhere a file can break. Take the conversions out and the day-to-day gets boring in the best way: your PO leaves your system, lands in ours, and the paperwork returns in the shape your system is expecting. No retyping, no reformatting, no rejected files to chase down on a Friday afternoon.

What we exchange

850

Purchase order

Your buyers send the order straight from your system.

855

Order acknowledgment

We confirm what we can fill, line by line, before anything ships.

856

Advance ship notice

Your receiving dock knows what’s on the truck before it backs in.

810

Invoice

Billing lands in accounts payable without a hand-off in between.

Need a document type that isn’t listed? Send us your trading partner spec and we’ll tell you straight whether we support it today.

Connect Your Way

Point to point, or through your VAN.

No two trading partners are wired the same way, so we support both of the common ones. If your IT group prefers a direct connection, we’ll exchange documents with your system point to point. If your orders already move through a VAN — a value-added network like SPS Commerce, the service that sits between trading partners and routes documents for them — we meet you there instead.

Either path, the burden of the change is ours, not yours. Nobody on your side has to learn a new portal or alter a process that’s working. Send us your trading partner requirements and we fit into the setup you already have.

How an EDI order flows between your store's system and Sturm USA: purchase order in by direct connection or VAN, through our in-house EDI to the warehouse, then acknowledgment, ship notice and invoice back to you.

Built For Wholesale

Shaped around how we actually operate.

Surplus and wholesale don’t behave like general retail. Lots arrive mixed. Country of origin has to follow the item, not the category. Stock moves in waves as restocks land, and a single dealer order can run to a hundred lines. Writing the software ourselves meant we could build for that reality instead of working around someone else’s assumptions about it.

It’s running in production now, and it’s a better structure for our wholesale operation than anything we had before — fewer exceptions to clear by hand, less drift between what the acknowledgment says and what leaves the dock.

What we didn’t do is take liberties with the standard. Every document still follows the established X12 rules for EDI data transfer. Building it in-house changed how our side works, not what your side receives. You get software built around our business, and data that meets the expectations of yours.
