Built to the traditional European pattern, it features two long hardwood side rails, evenly spaced wooden rungs mortised through the rails, and a heavy iron hook assembly at the top that allowed firefighters to catch a window sill or roof edge during vertical rescues and training exercises. The feet are shod with iron tips to bite into stone, cobble, or timber and resist splitting on hard landings.
