Description
Straight from Cold War-era East German military stores, this Nationale Volksarmee (NVA) cold-weather face mask is a genuine piece of Eastern Bloc field kit. Issued to conscripts and career soldiers stationed across the GDR's notoriously cold winters, the one-hole balaclava was a staple layer under steel helmets, field caps, and parka hoods. Today it offers your customers a rare combination of real military provenance, practical winter warmth, and an unmistakable utilitarian look.
The mask is knit from a dense, ribbed wool-blend yarn in a muted olive drab tone consistent with NVA cold-weather issue. The single large face opening exposes eyes, nose, and mouth without compromising peripheral vision — the way it was originally designed to be worn under a helmet. The long neck skirt tucks down inside a jacket collar to seal out drafts, and the crown can be rolled up to convert the piece into a watch-cap-style beanie when conditions ease up.
Why It Sells
- Authentic Eastern Bloc surplus — appeals directly to Cold War collectors, reenactors, and militaria enthusiasts looking for hard-to-find NVA pieces.
- Genuine cold-weather utility — wool-blend knit insulates well, breathes naturally, and resists odors better than synthetic balaclavas.
- Cross-category appeal — moves through militaria collectors, ice fishermen, snowmobilers, hunters in tree stands, winter commuters, and the workwear/heritage fashion crowd.
- Distinct OD colorway — the muted military green pairs naturally with field jackets, M65 parkas, and surplus layering pieces your customers are already buying.
Construction & Materials
- Ribbed wool-blend knit for warmth, stretch, and shape retention
- One-piece balaclava cut with single large face opening
- Long neck section seals against draft when tucked into a collar
- Crown can be rolled up and worn as a watch cap
- Original NVA issue, East German manufacture
Condition
This is used, previously issued surplus. Each piece has seen service life and will show honest field-use character — minor pilling, softened fibers, fading, or small imperfections in the knit are part of the authenticity. These are not reproductions and were never intended to leave the warehouse looking factory-new.
Care
Hand wash cold with a mild wool detergent and lay flat to dry to preserve the knit's shape and natural fiber loft.
