The spade head is a stout steel plate with a pointed profile for driving into hard ground, sharpened side edges for chopping and slicing sod, and a serrated edge along one side for sawing through roots. The turned hardwood handle terminates in a rounded ball grip that keeps a gloved hand from slipping off under load.
